Compressing files allows you to have all the room you could possibly need on your computer. In order to compress a file you will need to find the software, and you’ll need to learn how to use it. Don’t worry it’s not that bad.
Finding the correct tools: There are many applications that can compress files. They are usually called “file achievers” or “archiving software”. Some of the applications are free to use, then there are some that cost a few dollars. How do you know which one fits your needs? You should consider many things when looking for tools to compress files.
1. Compression ratio. Some will only compress smaller amounts of files. Many archiving tools will let you choose the level of compression and/or the format of the compressed file. However better compression often comes at the cost of decreased speed. Some types of files for example: music in the mp3 format and video files – can’t be compressed effectively with general purpose archives. A” good” file achiever should offer high compression ratio and the ability to set it manually.
2. Supported file formats. Most people skip over this crucial point when choosing an achiever. While the most popular format is “ZIP”, you’re likely to encounter many different (and sometimes better) file formats if you ever download files from the Internet, there are also, BZ2, TAR and GZ these are popular among the users of Unix-based systems. There are so many more. Good archiving tool should know how to compress files using popular formats (like ZIP) and should be able to open all popular file formats.
3.Cost. This is something you’ll need to decide for yourself. File achievers are not the most expensive kind of software, so you could probably find a good shareware achiever fairly affordable. There are also some achievers that are free, though they may lack “extra” functions. Free achievers are often as good as commercial tools at compressing and decompressing files.
Lets get started on how to compress files:
First: Select the files you want compressed and on your mouse right click it.
Second: From the pop up menu select;” add to archives”.
Third: Choose the name you want to call this file and also chose the format.
Last: Click “OK” and wait while the file compresses.
Guess what you are now done. You have just compressed your first file congrats.
