How to Enable JavaScript in Adobe Acrobat

published on 05.01.2012 in Programs

Adobe Acrobat has become very popular indeed throughout the word to display forms and documents. The reason it’s so popular is that all the document’s information such as colors and fonts are stored within the document itself. This means that when the Adobe Acrobat document (or PDF document as they are known) arrives, it looks exactly as the sender intended.

Some PDF documents are very clever in that they can contain programs that allow you to build interactive forms. Usually these forms are written with a programming language that is popular on the Internet, called JavaScript. Now, it’s important to know that JavaScript can also be used for malicious intent.

In other words, criminals can use it to write programs to invade your computer. Don’t worry, most anti-virus and anti-malware programs can pick these up before they do any damage, but as a safety precaution, Adobe sells Acrobat with JavaScript turned off.

It’s also possible that you may have turned JavaScript off yourself, or the administrator of your computer has done so. If you want to use Adobe Acrobat interactive forms and other JavaScript PDFs, then you will need to turn JavaScript back on again.

The quick and easy way to do this is to launch your copy of Adobe Acrobat, or Acrobat Reader. (Reader is the free version that you can download from the Internet to read PDF files, whereas Adobe Acrobat is the commercial software that enables you to create PDF files).

Navigate your way to the “edit” menu, and then click on “preferences”. In here there should be a JavaScript category. If you’re using an old version of Adobe, then the settings may be in a different place, so look around until you find them. If JavaScript is disabled, then simply check the box next to the option and click “ok”. Sometimes you will need administrator rights to turn this option on.

If you are worried about malicious software, you can quickly and easily follow these instructions to turn JavaScript on and off in Adobe Acrobat. Your computer should warn you about JavaScript content before it opens it. It’s a good idea never to open JavaScript PDFs from people you don’t know, or from documents you weren’t expecting to receive.
