Understanding dllhost.exe

published on 23.06.2010 in System

Dllhost.exe is a part of the Windows operating system. This file is very important as it is responsible for monitoring and starting .dll files within the system. Typically Dllhost.exe is a process that is started during the boot process of the computer as all .dll files that are required to start the system must first be initiated by Dllhost.exe.

Dll files are dynamic link library files that are commonly used by multiple different programs at a time. They are all contained within a single library and are very important to many of the actions that occur each time the system does any action. The importance of .dll files is only shadowed by Dllhost.exe. Without Dllhost.exe there would be no way for the .dll files to be opened or to know what to do when they are accessed.

Dllhost.exe is a very important piece of your machine it is important to ensure that the file is never removed, changed, or modified in any way. By doing any of these actions to Dllhost.exe there is a risk that the operating system will no longer be able to open .dll files and no longer work correctly. By changing this file there is also a risk of encountering fatal errors in the operating system which could create BSOD error messages to arise and ruin the computer users experience.

One thing to note is that there is also a virus that goes under the name Dllhost.exe to try to trick the system into letting it start on the boot up and to avoid detection. If you think that your system might have a fake Dllhost.exe file that is really a virus it is best to run a full and deep system scan with your security program to search for any malicious software that might be trying to stay hidden under the name Dllhost.exe. The easiest way to determine if the file that appears as Dllhost.exe is a legitimate Windows program is to look at the location of the file.

As the real program file is located in the Windows folder, wherever you have installed the operating system to, there is a good chance that if the file is located outside of this folder that it is in fact a malicious program. Another indication that Dllhost.exe is a viral infection on your system is if the systems resources are 100% taken up by a task labeled as Dllhost.exe. Many times the viral infection that appears as Dllhost.exe will take over most of the systems memory and make the system run very slowly. Once again, if you are experiencing a slow system it is best to run a security program through the system.

If the Dllhost.exe file that was located is in fact a viral infection it is best to remove it right away. Once the virus has been removed the best thing to do is to run a full registry scan to see if there are any pieces of the fake Dllhost.exe file left behind. Many times, even after the virus is removed there might be pieces left in the registry which could affect the systems performance.

This is why many people will run a registry cleaner or system optimizer after they know that the infection has been fully removed.
